TOS Review: Pearson

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb374/TOSCrew2011/Pearson/logo.png

We are history lovers in this house. So, we were very excited to be able to try out another History curriculum. Pearson is does Homeschool curriculum from Pre-k all the way up through. They are working to give you engaging curriculum at an affordable price.

MyWorld Social Studies for 5th grade is the book we reviewed.  Being very excited it was history, my kids wanted to tear right into it. While this was meant for 5th grade, I used it with all three of my kids, ranging from 2nd to 5th. I like to teach straight across the board from some subjects. I just expect more out of my older kids, and the younger one keeps up and follows along were she can. Though, I must say she really surprises me sometimes!

The 3 Monkey’s Thoughts:

My oldest absolutely loved it! He is my biggest history buff. He liked how it was broken down, and how they had good graphic’s. My middle child is not such the history lover, but didn’t mind it. She was however, not a huge fan of the tests. My youngest, really enjoyed it and got way more out of it then I thought she would. They all really liked the video’s at the beginning of each section.

My thoughts:

While this is very much like a public school book, and many do not care for that. I was very happy with it. I like curriculum that has most of the lessons done out for me, and I can just get the supplies we need, and move along. Another factor I really liked was the DVD-ROM with the teacher information on it. With worksheets of vocab, and tests ready for you.

The video’s at the beginning are great, and a nice visual. Another great thing I liked about this curriculum was that you can add in where you want. Like when we did the second chapter, we got extra books on Prince Henry the 8th, and Christopher Columbus. Doing this does not affect the way you teach this at all. I really liked that about it. Especially since lots of times, my kids like to learn more about the people we are talking about.

Doing this the way they suggest can be a bit overwhelming for all those involved. We decided to scale back the lessons to a few times a week. So it will last us a bit longer, but we can spend more time on certain areas.

Advantages of this curriculum:

It teaches, Map Skills, Vocab, Testing skills, Study habits, and more!

The basis of myWorld Social Studies, is to set ground work for students. To help them to become more active, and responsible citizens.

To Purchase:

You can buy myWorld Social Studies for $69.99

That includes the Student Worktext

myStory Video DVD-ROM

Teacher’s Resource Library DVD-ROM- which includes Teacher’s Guide, Lesson Plans, Audio Podcast, Hands-on Activities, and Editable Tests for each chapter, and Answer Keys.

I would recommend this Social Studies program to anyone just starting out homeschooling, or looking for something more straight forward. I really enjoyed it, and think that it is worth the money!

First State Park of the year…

This year I decided to buy the State Park Pass. Why? Well, last year our summer was mostly working in the garden, or mowing the lawn. (not that this isn’t important) We didn’t get out nearly as much as I wanted too.

Therefore, my thought was if I spend money on the pass. I will actually make an effort to get to these places. Making it our goal this summer to see how many State Parks we can visit. I will do a bit of background on each one with the kids, so they can get a bit of school out of it of course. (part of being a homeschooler, your mom is always thinking school LOL)

Monday was our first visit to a State Park for this year. We decided to visit Damariscotta Lake Park. It is a very nice little park. There is a playground, picnic area, and a beach. I of course surprised the kids with this, they did not know that we were going there. Their faces were priceless! I love still being able to surprise them.

I invited a friend of mine along with us, so we were able to visit, and enjoy a conversation while the kids played in the water. Which I think was still a bit chilly for me. Plus I got in some pictures…. you know me, always got the camera ready!

Did you know there is over 30 State Parks in Maine? I did not know this until I started looking. I can’t wait to visit most of them. Stay tuned for our adventure!

Educational Fair

Our 4H group decided to put together an Educational Fair this year. We were very excited about this. Great opportunity for our local homeschool kids to show off their work for the year. Took a little over a month to tweak, narrow down, and put this all together, but I think that it came out fantastic!

What is an Educational Fair you ask? Well the best way for me to explain it is.. is to tell you it’s a lot like a Science Fair only with more categories. The categories we included where Baking, Arts & Crafts, Science, Animals, History, Creative Writing, Photography, Technology & Engineering, and Creativity Unlimited (which is where anything that doesn’t fit in one of these categories goes). The kids were to pick up to 5 categories they wanted to enter. They also got premiums for First, Second, and Third Place.

My kids worked really well on some of their stuff, slacked on a few, and we pulled it all together the night before the fair. I must say though, they did really well. I was really impressed with the work the kids did. It was wonderful to see where they ventured in the subjects. Amazing work!

After the judges did their work, we had lunch with the different things from the baking category. Thankfully it was a beautiful day, so they went outside and played with chalk, bubbles, and kick ball while waiting for everything to be determined. Luckily, while we waited I was able to get my portfolio's done. So, that is one less thing that I have to worry about before fall! Smile

The big moment… the kids did really well.

Little Monkey came in first in baking (she made Chunky Chocolate Jam Bars), and she got third for her painting.

Monkey Man did really awesome. I’m so proud of him. He got first in photography, and science. Then he placed second in technology, and creative writing. All categories were also broken down in age groups. They were 5-8, 9-12, 13 and up! I’m so proud of all the kids that participated, they all did amazing!

A new phone app, sugar, and exercise…..

What do these have in common you ask???

Well, at my most recent doctors appointment (and this is why I hate going) my blood work showed that I was borderline diabetic. Now, granted I have know for a long time this could always be a possibility. There are a few people in our family that are diabetic, and I also had gestational diabetes for all three of my pregnancies. I was able to control that by diet, and never needed to take medicine.

I have been struggling with my weight for a long time, and I try to do things to help loose weight, but lets face it when we think about that “Diet” word.. its just causing failure. After my last appointment with my doctor, we decided to re test my blood sugar in a month. That means, she wants me to loose some weight this month, and watch my carb intake.

Thus far, I have been consuming less carbs.. Not going to lie, this one is hard for me. I love bread, and pasta! Most of my favorite foods are made with either of these! Now I have to learn to adapt. Even if this works, and I don’t become a full fledge Diabetic, I will have to continue to always watch my carbs. Lets face it, the risk will always be there. That means no more soda (Not that I am a huge soda person), and no more Caramel Ice Coffee, extra caramel, extra cream, and sugar. (Yup, that probably wasn’t helping me huh?) Taste so good though!

What I have a done to help myself this week. Well, Monkey Man and I went for a 2.6 mile walk on Friday. I was going to go again on Sunday, but the rain mad it hard. My plan is to go every other day til my body is a bit more used to it. I did that walk in 1 hour, including a 15 min stop to say “HI” to my uncle at the farm. I was really quite impressed with myself. I know I can do this. I’m going to lie though, if I have to do it alone, its going to be hard. I have also been watching my food in take. Limiting myself to only so many calories, and fewer carbs. I have done pretty good with this thus far. I struggle a little with eating more than once a day.. I’m not a huge 3 meals a day kind of person. Getting a little better with this as well.

So, that leaves you thinking where does the phone app come in? That my friends, is a great question. I needed something to help me keep track of my carb intake. Its called My Fitness Pal, and it is a completely free program. You can use it on your computer, or your phone. I like it on my phone, cause then when I am on the go, I can put in what I had. Then it is not just being forgotten. It has hundreds of foods already in its data base! Plus you can use the scan option, and scan a bar code to a product, and it brings up all the information right to your screen! Frist time I tried that I was so giddy! It was awesome! It keeps track of your calories, and lets you know how many remaining ones you have… Lets you see all your daily or weekly nutrition. You can see what you are eating to little or much of.  Letting you tweak your habits. I’m really hoping that this will help me keep both my carbs down, and to help me loose the weight I need.

If anyone has any good Diabetic Recipes that they would like to share with me, I’m looking for new options, and ideas to add to our menu. Trick will be finding something everyone will like.

*I was not given any compensation for writing this… all opinions are 100% mine.

The Homeschool Mother’s Journal:

In my life this week…

has been kind of weird, busy, and crazy all at once.

Monday we were in the Memorial Day Parade..

106_6404

That started my week off weird, since I felt like I was missing a day.. Lol

Next we spent a long day on the road, with errands, and dropping people off, but then had to go all the way back to the doctors office (so glad mine is open til 8pm) so we could get Monkey Man in… He ended up getting Poison Ivy, and got it around his eye.

Got lots of yard work done… planted some more in my garden, and put up our new screen house! (can’t wait to utilize it)

Started walking in the morning with Monkey Man, we have been doing 2.6 miles. (more on that story to come this week)

Enjoying the weather!

In our homeschool this week…

We have been busy with lots of stuff.. Monkey Man, is not sure if he is enjoying 5th grade yet or not.. (It’s a bit more intense). He is doing really good with the new Daily Writing book I got him though.

The girls are doing good.. Middle Monkey is struggling a bit on math, since we are getting into Multiplication. Little Monkey is enjoying it all!

History was a bit to much for us right now, so we are going to cut back the days. Plus we are going to a bit further in depth with some of the subjects. Like this week we learned about Christopher Columbus, so we are going to get some books about him.. and read more.

We are still enjoying our Science class with another family. We are doing the Solar System right now… I think we are going to try to get to Lighthouses to, and maybe visit a few this summer. (That should be a blast)

Also, this week we have been working on our Educational Fair stuff. That is this next weekend. The kids are entering 4-5 subjects. They are really excited about it, and are working hard on their projects. Monkey Man even wrote a creative story.. I am really impressed.

Stay tuned for more information on that! Want to read more about what we are up to? Check out our Homeschool Blog here.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

This week.. we are going to be super busy!

We have 4H (making catapults),

Girl Scouts (our last meeting for this year),

Library,

Doctor appts,

Science Class,

Educational Fair,

Graduation Party,

and we are hoping to fit in a playdate, and possibly a photo shoot, and I would like to get a trip in to a State Park!

My favorite thing this week was…

that I walked 2.6 miles without dying!!!

What’s working/not working for us…

Evan-Moore Daily Writing Traits.. I can’t believe how well Monkey Man, and Middle Monkey are doing with this!

Questions/thoughts I have…

I can’t wait to go on some hikes, visit the ocean, and visit some new places we haven’t been yet!

Look for our Summer Bucket List to be up soon!

Things I’m working on…

having more patients, mine have been missing lately.

Books I’m reading…

Two for the dough, by Janet Evaniovich
