Where are we racing off too?? Pinewood Derby of course!

Yup, its that time of year again… Monkey Man, has been working on his car. Not as well as I think he should have been (got his dad’s procrastination).

I love this time of year, cause he just amazes with what he comes up with for design. One year it was a pirate ship, another year he did a car… Last year he wanted a crocodile, but we couldn’t get it to work right… and this year. He came up with a sword. Not any old sword, a Greek sword.

The funny thing was, he was like I don’t need weights on my car. When we asked why, he says, cause I don’t care if it races well, I’m only going for design. We convinced him he should at least try to race… so we put weights on.

The big day arrived today… and after we got weighed in and everything we sat and waited for the racing to begin.

First all the boys went up and voted on best of show. That was killer waiting til the very end to know how everyone voted. He was on pins and needles, and so was I.  

 

Then let the racing begin. He was second up, and he put his car up their with no care in the world.. Watched it go down, and low and behold he won the race! This happens 3 more times! He is just amazed! He says to me, mom, I don’t know how this happened, all I wanted to do was win design, but I am actually WINNING! It was hilarious!

He was first up in the first round of finals.. he didn’t win, but was happy to make it there. We figured it out, that he came in 5th overall.. (which out of 28 boys isn’t shabby) I am very proud of him!

Next up came the announcement of winners, the part we had all been waiting for. Did he get design?? The pressure was on… And he did it! He won Best of Show for the Weeblo Den!!! Way to go Monkey Man!

He had a great time, and so did we. Another great year… and great accomplishments!

 

Here is to next year! I’m sure he is starting to think of a new design already… I’m anxious to see what it is.

Pinewood Derby 2011

 

Any of you following me for any length of time, knows that my Monkey Man is in Cub Scouts.

Well this past weekend was the Pinewood Derby for this year… and I love to look back and see how different his cars turn out. Here is the ones from 2009 and 2010.

This year he wanted to go for speed. Where as last year he was going for Best of Show. He did really good this year. I was impressed. He was against 22 kids and he did really good. He won his first two races by quite a bit. The third one got him good, but he was a super sport about it. My little man is growing up so fast!

Pinewood Derby

 

Our yearly Cub Scout Derby was this past weekend. Hunter really enjoys making the car for the Pinewood Derby. This year we looked through some patterns and really wanted to make something different than an ordinary car. Which can I tell you there really are some amazing ideas out there by kids! I’ve seen SpongeBob cars, cheese cars, sports cars, military cars, and so much more. The imagination on these kids are just fabulous! I love to see what they come up with.

After some debating Hunter decided on a ship this year. We cut it, and he sanded it down…. and then we got to work on figuring out the color scheme and design. Michael's had a sale on the paint that I use, so I headed over and picked out a number of colors for him to chose from.

In the meantime, we were also working on two other cars. This year our pack decided to also have a sibling race. Andy picked the design of their cars, They helped sand them and then picked their colors and painted. Hunter settled on a pirate ship theme to his. It came out really nicely I think. The girls of course needed to have pink, and purple in their cars! All and all i think that they did a very nice job.

Hunter placed 5th in our den. Not sure what he was between Bears & Wolves. He was a bit disappointed since last year he placed 2nd, but I had to explain to him that their was a bit more competition this year. He might have a chance at going to Districts for design, or even getting it for our pack. I’m very proud of them all. It was a pretty good success.
