Hike ….

This past weekend we decided to take the scouts on a hike. To find “Real” woods is hard in Florida. So, I have to say the trail we picked this time was very much the closest to woods we have gotten thus far.

The kids had a blast as usual…. my kids love nothing better than to get out their with nature. My leg is still healing, so it was a bit hard at times for me to keep up, and it was ready for a rest at the end, but all and all was a good hike.

Writing down what trees he sees

Looking for the Geochace, we never found it

We were able to see some deer tracks, lots of types of trees, a hawk, spiders, and a few other things along the way. Not sure how long of a hike it was…I'd have to say at least a mile. I’m hoping to do another one soon. We love to get out their and explore nature!

Geochacing Fun

On Monday morning of last week we decided to venture out. We needed an adventure, so that is what we turned our outing into….

Lake Kissimmee Sate Park

After searching a few options of where we could go, we decided on Lake Kissimmee State Park. This State park is really only about an hour away from us, though it seemed a bit longer than that. Our GPS got us there nicely… we have enjoyed exploring the area around us, and this is one way to do it.

We enjoy geocaching cause it is an adventure. With just a few clues you are off to find the “treasure”.

Start of our hike

Follow the signs

Here is our pretty spider we saw!

Our pictures are of us starting out, and the sign we followed… Then our find of the day.. our pretty spider friend. We followed the marked trails of yellow, and blue, until we found our clues to take us to our “treasure”.

Yup we found it

What shall we pick to bring back with us

In geocaching tradition you sign in, and then you can leave something behind, if you choose to bring something with you. Of course that meant we had to come up with 3 things to leave, cause each child has to choose something! So, we had our adventure, and we had a great time! We hope to have another adventure soon… stay tuned for more to come…..

What did you do on Saturday?

We got up this morning, and packed a lunch, and headed out the door. We were off for a hike..(ok in Florida its more like a stroll) with the Cub Scouts. Here in Polk County we have trail ways to walk. This morning we went on the Lake Whales Trail Ways, and walked a mile. These trail ways are also part of the Geo Cache. Have you ever heard of that?? Learn more about it HERE! It is basically where they have a hidden box, filled with treasure (things people leave) and you chose something to leave, and take something with you. Sign a log book, and there is a stamp to mark that you have been to that location. Very exciting to kids, as it is like a treasure hunt. We had a blast doing it this morning. We are looking to do one next weekend as well. There are many you can do, sometimes it costs a little (a dollar pre adult) but most are free. There are quite a few in Maine as well. If you go to the website I listed, there is a spot to put in your zip code to find out where they are. Some park and rec departments have gotten in on them too, and have simplified directions for those of you without a GPS. We found ours without a GPS this morning. If you decide to try it out, please let me know how it went!

Here we are checking out the box.... (kids very excited to see what was in it)

They used an old ammunition box to store the stuff in. It was hidden next to an oak tree. Hunter was very eager to root around inside the box, to see what there was!

Our first Geochacing find! :)
