The Homeschool Mother’s Journal

In my life this week… We accomplished a lot.. I finished up the kids lessons for our first 8 wks of school. Plus we had a few fun days!

In our homeschool this week… We were still on Vacation. We are starting back tomorrow Smile  The kids are actually pretty excited about that… we have done a lot of fun things this summer. Plus, the joy of homeschooling we can take days off as things opportunities arise.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… This week we are not going to much.. Little Monkey has Surgery on Tuesday, and we might see a movie on Wednesday if she feels up to it.

My favorite thing this week was… spending time with just my girls while Monkey Man was away playing at Cub Scout Camp with Daddy!

What’s New working/not working for us  …  We are going to try the 8 weeks on, 2 weeks off this year… With a few extra days off thrown in… We’ll see how this goes, and keep you posted.

Questions/thoughts I have… Hoping that things go smoothly and we have another good year!

Things I’m working on… Being more patient, and less stressed.

Books I’m reading…  Nothing at the moment.. in between books. Trip to the library in order on Monday to stock up for our first week of school. Smile

Five Question Friday

image343

1. Vow renewal ceremonies-yay or nay?

You know… I have thought about that many times…  I’m just not the gushy mushy kind, so I could really care less.

2. What sound/s annoy you the most?

Any little noise my kids make when I have a killer headache… and my daughter is very loud, so most she makes gets on my nerves after awhile. Smile

3. If you had to pick, would you have only all boys, or only all girls for kids?

Well I currently have 2 girls and 1 boy…. I must say after my time with them thus far.. I would have to say all boys, my son was by far the easiest. The girls are to dramatic, and emotional. Drives me Looney! I can’t even imagine what it will be like as a teenager… OH MY!

4. Do you believe in alternative medicine?

Sometimes, I have to do my research first… I do believe that conventional medicine is not always the answer.

5. Would you take a family member's children and raise them if they needed it?

Yes, I would have to say I would.. A friend of mine is currently going thru this situation. I really believe if it is best for the child, I would do it. I often get sad and emotional thinking of all those foster care kids out there that don’t have anyone to call their own, belong too. I wish, I could help them all. With that being said, I couldn’t see any of my family go to foster care without doing anything. My heart is often to big…

Can you imagine not feeling like you belong anywhere though?

Count down to the new year, and changes to come:

Our new year of school is going to start on August 1st. This year I have decided to try something a bit different and go with 8 weeks of school, and then take a couple weeks off.

I’m anxious to start cause my kids really need to get back on schedule. Don’t get me wrong we enjoy summer, but my kids are totally schedule children, without it there is complete ciaos. There attitudes get crazy, their behavior goes downhill, its nuts!!!

We took off about 6 weeks, and I really think that is enough for us, and it got us through our Summer Camps, so we won’t have any interruptions. If I wait any longer, I’m sure besides me pulling out every last strand of my hair, they would fight me to get back in routine. Plus due to us starting so early, we have plenty of extra days to play with, without getting behind.

I’m hoping being that this is our 2nd year of Homeschooling it will flow a bit nicer for me. I’m pretty happy with our Curriculum choices… just need to get a few last things, that we will start a bit later in the year. Also new this year… I’m on the TOS Crew. I’m super excited about this, as I was following a few blogs last year that were involved in this. Which means, we will have some really fun reviews to work into our daily school. I’m excited to see if we discover some new curriculum to add.

I’m really thinking that adding the “Workbox System” to our daily routine. I need something to fill a bit of time when the kids are done with their down with their work.. Why?? Well, when the kids get up and leave, and the rest of them still have work.. we tend to have a bit of an issue. They think that they are doing more than the other and so on. Plus I need them to learn a bit of independence. Just a bit of tweaking.

I think those are the only major changes we are making this year. What about you? Are you looking to make any changes in your homeschool this year?

To all my Homeschoolers out there…

or even the ones thinking about trying Homeschooling… The Old Schoolhouse Magazine is a great resource. It is jam packed with great stories from other homeschoolers, and lots of ideas, and info.

I was very hesitant to get this magazine, but am so happy I ordered it.

Now is your chance to give it a look, see what you think with no strings attached. No obligation to buy, or email address to put in, just so you can see it.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. July is National Ice Cream month...your favorite flavor? Soft served, hand dipped, or frozen yogurt...which do you prefer? And technically yogurt is not ice cream but its hot outside so I'll let that slide for today.

Ice cream is this family’s addiction. We love ice cream! I have one son that has an allergy to milk, so he has his own soy or coconut milk ice cream.

My personal favorite, I have way to many to list.. Here are just a few.. Ben & Jerry’s Brownie DoGooder, Phish Food..

I also really enjoy Caramel overload, Black Raspberry, and Peanut Butter Cup overload. Not a huge fan of frozen yogurt though.

2. When you travel do you tend to pack too much or too little?

The first time I traveled with kids, I went so over board it was nuts! This was of course before the increase in security and the rising costs of bags on airplanes.

After learning my lesson.. I’m now really good about less is more. I pack the necessities, and call it good, since you can always buy something if you REALLY need it.

In our car, I do go a bit over board still though..we travel by car a lot, so I make sure we have lots of books, coloring books, activities, music, books on cd, or dvd’s to keep us entertained. Plus a nice stash of snack food, cause you never know when you will be stuck on in a traffic jam for 2 plus hours!

3. What's your favorite cleaning product?

I would have to say Mr Clean Magic Easers. They really can do wanders.

Other than that, still on the lookout for that amazing cleaning product. Smile

4. Which is the greater tragedy-an innocent person imprisoned or a guilty person set free? Explain.

I would really have to say both..

I mean could you imagine going to jail for any length of time for something you did not do? To have your family ripped away, faith from people gone, and to have that brand on your back for the rest of your life? Do you really ever walk away from it, even after you get out??

To set a guilty person free.. well that seems to be a growing trend these days doesn’t it? I know, people say you have to have faith in the justice system, blah, blah, blah. But if you can’t put away the guilty, how are we suppose to believe in the justice system. In the most recent case.. Any mom in this country had to be sickened. To watch someone who couldn’t even be bothered to report her daughter missing for 30 days..30 DAYS!!! How does one do that? I know if my kids were missing it would be minutes before I was reporting it. Sorry getting off topic.. What does that say to the rest of the world? Do you think that their won’t be others that try something of the same, cause after watching this trial so closely they will think they can get away with it???!!! It just sets the world up for more bad things to happen in my opinion.. but again that is all it is my opinion.

5. What's the longest trip you've taken by car?

When I drove from FL to ME, and then in a week went back to FL, only to turn around in another week to return to ME. It seemed like the longest month of my life, over 3,000. However, in that time I learned to have more faith in myself. As I thought I could never travel that far by myself with 3 kids, and I did it, with ease even. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I was rather proud of myself! Bring on the travel! Lol.. Winking smile

6. tennis-golf-canoeing-biking...pick one.

Only one.. hmmm.. I would have to say biking. However, I am really out of shape for it now, but I used to love it. Would like to get back into someday.

7. What sound drives you crazy?

Any annoying little ones my kids are making when my head is throbbing and ready to explode.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

The girls and I are enjoying our week alone.. while the boys are away at Cub Scout Day Camp.

Interested to know…..

I was bouncing around on the internet earlier.. checking my usual spots, Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, Emails, and of course BlogFrog. When I stumbled upon a question in a community I followed, and it got me thinking.  The question was “How much TV do your kids REALLY watch?”  You can find the whole conversation here.

I responded, but it was still making me wonder other peoples views, so I figured I’d come ask my fellow blog readers what they thought?

Do you think that your kids watch to much TV? This study done at PBS amazed me… Although, if you think about it, people don’t realize how fast time goes by when you are sitting in front of that TV.

My kids do not have a TV in their bedroom, nor do they really watch that much TV. Maybe 2hr per day (I’m pretty sure that is even estimating high)  unless it is the middle of winter and its to cold outside, or if it is rainy out. I make them explore all other options before turning to the TV. I personally don’t even watch that much TV. We don’t have cable, so our only sources of viewing are Hulu, or Netflix. At night hubby and I will watch a show before bed to relax… unless we have a really good book to read. (which is more often the option) My screen time is mostly spent on the computer. (yup, my downfall) I’m either on here to update my blog, or to check my Facebook.

When I was a kid, I wasn’t allowed to watch much TV. I got to watch a few shows with my parents, but other than that I didn’t watch it. I was not allowed to watch Saturday morning cartoons. Sometimes I would sneak them, but I had to be very careful not to get caught. My hubby on the other hand was allowed to watch TV basically whenever he felt like it. So, we have always struggled on the topic of  “How much is to much?”

I believe that kids get to used to It entertaining them, and then they can’t do it themselves. They can’t go out and find something to do. We have a huge yard, and live in the country. I’m glad my kids have such a great imagination.

Plus I don’t want TV to hinder in getting our daily chores, or school work done.

I’m not here to say that anyone's views are wrong… just simply interested in how you feel about this? Leave me a comment telling me your views…

FOR TODAY

July 25th, 2011

Outside my window... It was a really nice day. Cool this morning, then a nice breeze all day… a bit of a rain shower this afternoon.

I am thinking...  Wow, could it really be August in a few days already? Where has the time gone? Summer seems to be just flying by….

I am thankful for...  The opportunities that my kids are able to get.

From the learning rooms... Nothing today…still on summer vacation, but we start up in a week. August 1st marks our first day back! Smile

From the kitchen... We had spaghetti tonight! Yummy!

I am wearing...  Shorts, orange shirt

I am creating... a clean school room.. I cleaned it today and it is so pretty.. Now if we can just keep it that way. Great way to start the new year!

I am going...  to be finishing up our lesson plans.

I am reading...  Nothing at the moment, finished both my books by Laura Plamer. They were pretty good. Maybe a trip to the library tomorrow to get new ones. Smile

I am hoping...  The rest of the week goes a bit more smoothly… It has been a ruff start to the week. The girls were in cranky moods today.

I am hearing... Littlest Monkey reading to herself, its quiet time, before bed. (I’m a bit late getting this up today)

Around the house...  I did the dishes, laundry, and cleaned the school room.. As well as partially mowed the lawn today. Gotta finish up the rest of the lawn tomorrow, and vacuum.

One of my favorite things...  When the kids are in good moods, and clam all day. Think we are going to work on a new schedule to put up tomorrow. Need more structure. AHHHH!

A few plans for the rest of the week:  We are going to chill at home tomorrow, movie, doc appt, pool with friends, beach, and a playdate to finish off our week. (for us girls) The boys are at Cub Scout Day Camp all week! Smile

Here is picture for thought I am sharing... Picture of my nicely cleaned Schoolroom! Isn’t it pretty!

In my life this week… we are still on school break, but we are having lots of fun. Enjoying our time together, as a family.  We have had a really crazy few weeks. Smile

In our homeschool this week… we are gearing up for the start of our new year.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… These next week Monkey Man is going to Cub Scout Day Camp with Daddy… so its just us girls, and we are going to have fun while the boys are away. We are going to go to the movies, beach, and do a playdate! Lots of fun!

My favorite thing this week was… Spending a day with my Monkey Man all by ourselves. Doesn’t happen nearly as much as it should!

What’s working/not working for us…  What we are trying new this year.. is doing 8 weeks of school and taking 2 weeks off.

Questions/thoughts I have… Do any of you do so many weeks of school, and then take a few weeks off? Does it work well for you?

Things I’m working on… Trying to get things organized for our new year, and get our curriculum ready for the first few weeks.

Books I’m reading…  Trying a new author Linda Palmer… So far they aren’t so bad.. Still anxiously awaiting Nicholas Sparks new book. Winking smile

Five Question Friday

image[3]

1. If your husband had the BIG V and you got pregnant what would your first reaction be? For the dudes, what would your first reaction be if your wife told you she was pregnant after the Big V?

Well, absolutely would be super shocked. Then I would be happy.. as I love kids. Have my hands full with my three, but would never be sad about having more.

2. Best memory about this summer so far.

Fun at the beach with my 3 Monkeys! The kids had a blast.

3. How often do you change your sheets? Your kids sheets?

We change everyone’s once a week. Sometimes more if I have the time. I’m a freak about my sheets being fresh!

4. Having just gone through TSA, would you rather have a full-body scan or a pat-down?

I think a full-body scan, since I really don’t want some freak patting me down. I mean, some of them are not cool.

5. Since it is fair time...what's your favorite fair (county or state) memory?

Not really sure I have one, since I never really went that often. We have a local State Fair, that we go to every once and awhile. I enjoy going with my kids and eating our favorite fair food. Smile

Summer Fun update:

So what have you been up to this summer? Enjoying that beautiful sun?? Or has it been more rain where you live?

We have had a very weird summer, warm but nice days, with low humidity, crazy Thunderstorms, and tornado’s, and last but not least nasty humidity when you least expect it!

How have you been keeping your kiddo’s busy this summer, or even yourself? Summer has always been hard for me, cause I don’t like to be cooped up, but I hate to spend mega bucks to take the kids to have fun. Plus its only me to wrangle the 3 monkeys, when the hubby is working. I’ve gotten braver over the years though, and they have gotten a bit more tame, so we do venture out a bit more.

This year you can check out our list of things we really wanna do on our Summer Bucket List … which I update as we do things.

This year due to busy schedules and lack of funds.. or list of hopefully things are limited. We try to take opportunities as they arrive.

Since Middle Monkey was headed off to Summer Camp for a week, we wanted to do something fun as a family before she left. Along the way, we went to a local park with a beach.

106_4801

106_4814

106_4813

The kids had a wonderful time… as did us parents. We swam for a few hours, and then we had lunch before leaving to drop Middle Monkey off. More on that in a bit….

Garden update:

As the summer is progressing we are getting some really amazing produce in our garden. Smile

I’m so impressed with some of the stuff that we have grown. I have to tell you though, it has tasted amazing! Yummy!

Our Broccoli is growing like mad!

106_4731

Here is the our Cabbage!

106_4821

We made them for dinner last night and it was so good! The kids love to eat things out of the garden, that they know they have grown. It also helps them to try things they otherwise wouldn’t eat. Great tool, to help with picky eaters.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. July 20th marks the anniversary of the first time man stood on the moon. Flash forward 42 years to July 8, 2011 which marked the start of the final Space Shuttle mission. Should we continue to explore space? Should nations devote more or fewer of their resources to exploring space? Would you want to go into space if the opportunity arose?

Wow, hard question. I think that the things we have accomplished getting to space, and being in space is amazing. Do I think they should continue, I’m not really sure. That is a lot of money that could be going back into our country, or spread over other projects needing help. What else could we accomplish in space? I think, that may be a better question answered. Would I go to space if I could? Heck ya, I think it would be the most amazing thing to see the world from space, to see what god has created. Such an Awe inspiring moment I’m sure.

2. What are three things in your freezer?

Ice Cream of course, Hamburger, and Ice packs (we do lots of picnic's)

3. If you could see any band/artist perform live tonite who would it be? It has to be someone living...no Beatles, Elvis, etc.

I would have to say either Nickelback, or Tim McGraw.. Yup, I love all music…

4. Ice-cubed or crushed? Or are you one of those people who don't like ice?

I prefer cubed ice, and I like to crunch on it after I’m done drinking my drink… Bad habit.

5. The owner of a small restaurant outside of Pittsburgh recently announced he was banning children under six, saying they regularly disrupted other customer's meals. You can read the story in more detail here but isn't this a perfect topic to discuss in our Wednesday Hodgepodge? Have at it friends...what are your thoughts?

What makes anyone better than a child? I have been to numerous restaurants with Adults being more of an interruption or annoyance than a child.  I think that if they are going to do it they need to ban all children and make it an adult only place.  Could be a very heated topic!

6. What was your first car? How did it come to be yours?

A Ford Ranger, my dad gave it to me.

7. If I had a nickle for every time I _________________ I'd be rich.

lost my temper

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Only 3 more days til I see my Middle Monkey… She has been at Summer Camp. This was her first time, and only my second time being away from her for so long. Its really weird, and I am so anxious to hear her amazing stories from camp! Hope she is having such a blast!!!!

Blue Bunny Review & Giveaway

It has been some of the hottest days of the summer over the last few days. Crazy humidity and heat!

So what better way to cool off than with some Ice Cream right? I scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM! Smile

We love Ice Cream in this house. So when we were offered a chance to try the Blue Bunny new Champ Ice Creams, we were all for it!  Who can say no to Ice Cream right??

Blue Bunny has been around for many years, and is sold in all 50 states! They have nearly 500 tasty treats to give a try. 500 can you imagine? I would love to try each and everyone of them!

The newest ones to the team are Champ Mini Swirl Birthday Party Ice Cream Cones. These were the hit of my house. The kids really loved them, and honestly I really loved them too. They taste just like birthday cake, and who doesn’t have a weakness for birthday cake??
Or you could have Champs Mini Swirl Vanilla Ice Cream Cones.. which have a nice hard chocolate shell around vanilla ice cream. These were really good too!
My husbands favorite was the Mini Variety Ice Cream Sandwiches… These come in a box of 16 and you can choose from either Vanilla or Chocolate!

The biggest thing I liked from all of the different ones we tried, was that they are all mini. Which makes them perfect size for my little monkeys! No more waste or huge messes, cause they can eat them in a timely manner. LOVE IT!

How would you like to try one of the Blue Bunny Treats & Flavors?

DageDar Review/Giveaway

Have you heard of the newest toy to hit the shelves? DageDar is made making its way to the hottest new toy of the season! It is from the makers of ZhuZhu pets. This is a game of Speed and Skill.

DageDar is a from the Dimension 33… and a DageDar ball weighs 33 grams. Each character shows a distinct personality traits. There are different challenges, with each different course you set up. The object is for the ball to make it through the course without it falling out. Leaving you the versatility to make your own stunts and tricks.

My son thinks these are the coolest thing ever.. He made different tracks using the pieces he had to construct his own. He loves to make them jump and fly through the air. Him and his sister love to see who’s can go faster. There are many tracks you can purchase to make it longer and more challenging.

They were definitely a hit in our house, even with my husband. We love toys that you can use your own imagination to make them even better… or to give them a new look. These would be great for friends to get together and battle it out.

FOR TODAY

July 18th, 2011

Outside my window... It is super hot! Phew, where is the heat coming from all the sudden?

I am thinking... Hope my Middle Monkey is having fun at Summer Camp. Seems super weird not to have her here. Winking smile

I am thankful for... The opportunities I can provide to my children, that I didn’t get as a child, or wouldn’t ask for.

From the learning rooms...we are still on break, but learning some odds and ends stuff over the week from 4H… 1st of August we are back to school. Let the count down begin!

From the kitchen... Nothing cause we have a Boyscout event to attend tonight, and they are providing dinner.

I am wearing... Shorts, T-shirt, flip flops

I am creating... a new schedule for school, and a semi Workbox system. A few new changes for this year. Smile

I am going... to go crazy worrying about how my middle monkey is doing all week. I hope to receive a letter from her in the next few days!

I am reading... Nothing at the moment…been to busy to read!

I am hoping... That our busy week, isn’t to crazy. We have lots going on this week even with one child away!

I am hearing... The giggling of my only two home, while Little Monkey gets ready for her Day Camp.

Around the house... We have laundry to catch up on, and lawn to mow… Think I can get to it this today?

One of my favorite things... The smiles on my kids when they are confident.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Day Camp, Boy Scout stuff, Movies, Dentist appt, 4H projects to finish, play dates, garden work to be done, 4H meeting, and then back to pick up Middle Monkey, and get Monkey Man ready for his Boy Scout Day Camp next week! PHEW!

Best week or the worse week???

Will it be the best week or the worse week of Middle Monkey’s Summer??? Only time will tell… Tonight we finished packing her up, and getting her ready to head off tomorrow for the first big journey of her childhood… A right of passage if you will.

She is headed to Summer Camp…for the first time, for a WHOLE week. My kids don’t spend much time away from me, so I say it could be the worse week, cause she could get incredibly homesick. (I’m crossing my fingers this is not the case) She has only stayed away from me for 2 weeks once, with my mom. While she was with family, she still had a bit of an issue with it. This time she will be with no-one she knows, and 2 hrs away from home.

I’m crossing my fingers that she enjoys it, and has the time of her life. I really want this to be something special she gets to tell about for the next few weeks, months, years!

What do you think?? Her swim suit, towel, clothes, flashlight, and clothes are packed… (ok with a million other things..lol) and she is ready to hit the road.

Check back in a week to see how she made out!

Did you ever go to Summer Camp??

In my life this week…

It has been very challenging… We are working really hard on the family home front and a few issues we are having.

In our homeschool this week…

We are still on summer vacation, but we have been really busy still. This week we went to 4H, and worked on our Educational Display….. and a few other fair projects.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

This week we are dropping middle monkey off at Summer Camp…but before that we are going to the beach.

During the week, littlest monkey has Day Camp. So monkey man and I have a few days to ourselves.

Maybe a trip to see my dad, and a movie date or two.

My favorite thing this week was…

a really good talk with my family. We are working on a few things to make things a bit smoother around here.

What’s working/not working for us…

is all the craziness around here…. I’m really hoping for our new method to work out.

Questions/thoughts I have…

Why does everything have to be so nuts??

Things I’m working on…

A new schedule, and getting things ready for the start of our new year.

Books I’m reading…

Nothing at the moment… Got any suggestions for me?

1. If you knew your best friend's spouse was cheating on her or him, would you tell her (him)?

Only if I could provide concrete evidence, or it could get really messy. Really one of those subjects, you really hope never comes up.

2. Soda in a can or a bottle?

If I was to have to choose, I would have to say I prefer fountain soda the best. Just taste better I think! Smile

3. What do you wash first, hair or body?

My body… not sure why. Interesting question though

4. What advice would you give to any new mama?

To take naps when the baby naps, and to let people help if they offer.. (cause it won’t happen for long, lol)

5. What is your best hangover remedy?

Don’t really have one, cause I don’t have hangovers… plus I don’t drink often. Winking smile

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. How has your hometown changed since you were a kid? What has changed most about the neighborhood you grew up in?

Don’t think that it has changed that much. A few extra stores and such, a few houses torn down…but the norm in a town I think.

2. What song makes you laugh?

My kids make me laugh everyday!

3. Are you a fan of Harry Potter? Read the books? Seen any/all of the movies? Will you be standing in line somewhere close to midnight later this week? For those of you playing along today who live outside the US or UK is Harry Potter a phenomenon in your part of the world?

I read the books, we have seen most of the movies, but I am not such a dyer fan that I have to stand in line waiting for the doors to open.

4. If the truth hurts, will you tell a lie? Are we better off as a society in a world that allows no form of deception whatsoever?

No, the truth hurts period. If we don’t tell it, how will we grow as people?

5. What is your favorite 'sauteed in garlic and butter' food? Or garlic and olive oil if that makes you feel better.

I like it either way really. We use butter, and we use lots of olive oil too.

6. Attending any reunions this summer/year? High school? family? Other? Do these events stir up excitement or dread?

Yup, we have already been to one Family Reunion this summer, and we have one more to go to in a few weeks. I do enjoy them.

7. Lilac, hydrangea, peony...pick one.

Lilac! Love them!

8. Insert your own random thought here.

It has been extremely hot lately! Not sure I want it that hot! Smile

FOR TODAY

July 11th 2011

Outside my window... It is a super hot! Not so sure that I am ready for this weather!

I am thinking... So much to do today, and not enough time to do it in.

I am thankful for... helping hands! I so need helping hands these days!

From the learning rooms... We are still on break.. but we have been picking up some odds and ends learning, without them really knowing they are learning. Smile

From the kitchen... We are going to have Taco’s! Yummy!

I am wearing... Shorts, t-shirt, and flip flops

I am creating... My grocery list, and menu plans for the next few weeks. I am way behind in this!

I am going... to be super busy again this week

I am reading... Some Barbara Delinsky books still, then moving on to my Author I want to try out.

I am hoping... that things start to come together.. I’m getting very warn out lately.

I am hearing... My kids decide what they want for breakfast!

Around the house... We are going to be doing a lot today. We have a chicken fence to build, poison Ivy to pull, gardens to weed, dishes, and laundry!

One of my favorite things... When things go smoothly.

A few plans for the rest of the week:

We are going to the movies, play dates, library, 4H, and then my middle monkey is heading off to camp for the week. Smile (For the first time)

Here is picture for thought I am sharing...

This is me playing with my camera..
